Chapter Twenty-Five

Time Passages

Jess, Olive and Bailey all sat around a table in the small three-bedroom apartment in Ventura Beach. As was the usual when Olive interpreted Jane’s plans, she’d bought the entire apartment. It would sit, carefully tended, just as a number of other small places all over the world were sitting quietly, waiting for Jane or one of her friends to need them.

Olive had never really had a chance to experience truly warm waters. In fact, she’d spent very little time in the water at all beyond some experimentation in Lake Chelan. Lake Chelan tended to be cold for most of the year and, even at its best, still cool.

Most of Washington and Oregon’s waters were cold. The beaches tended toward rocky areas and while watching the ocean and listening to its chatter was a nice pastime, it was hardly the same as participating with all your heart in the waters of a truly warm ocean.

Jess and Olive were participating with all their hearts. Bailey joined in from time to time, but spent most of her time sunning herself, reading trashy novels, or thinking about James.

She’d thought that Jane’s relationship with Dale was about perfect. They both got their freedom, and both got all the time together they wanted.

But, after being away from James a lot of days in a row for several weeks, it began to lose its luster. She just missed him and tended to pine a bit when she wanted to be just having fun with Olive and Jess.

She also had no interest in the fine young males that roamed the beaches. Oh, she enjoyed the aesthetics of seeing a piece of art walk past, but it was no longer of any real interest.

Bailey knew Jane wouldn’t be that happy about her final decision on their little business together, but also knew that she’d come around. Jane just wanted people to be happy. To that end, she texted Jane.

B: Hey

J: Hey sweetie!

B: What’s up?

J: Nothing much. Looking the basement over with Jean.

B: Sounds like fun. Not.

J: lol it actually is kind of fun

B: You’re weird

J: I am

B: im goin back to Vegas

J: Thought you might sooner or later. James?

B: Yea. Miss him

J: Gonna move in?

B: Not yet but maybe. Don't think it works the same for us as you

J: Yeah, Dale and I pretty special

B: I never got my ass full of spikes though

J: spose that makes the difference?

B: Maybe

J: You goin before the thing in KS

B: Maybe tonight if James likes the idea

J: ok

B: all you got is ok?

J: anythign else help?

B: nope

J: then all i got is ok

J: and love you much

B: same

Bailey put her phone down, her heart about six pounds lighter.

“Hey, Olive?”

“What?”

“You in a mood?”

“I'm always in a mood, sugar.”

“Yeah. Why’s that?”

“Dunno, but Jane was happy that I was still like this, so I guess you got nothin to complain about?”

Bailey grinned. “‘But sometimes I still do’?”

“Yeah. Those old guys had a few good ideas.”

“Sweetie, I need to go to Vegas. You have time?”

Olive smiled a big smile.
